Your Most Common Shower Questions - Answered by Triton’s Technical Expert, Martyn Brown

Every week, Triton’s Customer Experience team handles thousands of calls from customers who need quick help with their showers. The good news? Most of these issues are easy to understand and can often be solved without a service visit.

To help you get answers faster, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide with insights from Martyn Brown, Triton’s Contract & Technical Manager, highlighting the most common questions customers ask and what you can do before picking up the phone.

Why Has My Showers PRD been activated?

The Pressure Relief Device (PRD) is a built‑in safety feature that protects your electric shower if pressure becomes too high, usually caused by:

  • A blocked showerhead

  • A collapsed shower hose

  • Aftermarket accessories restricting flow

If your PRD has activated, you’ll notice water leaking from a clear tube or plastic elbow inside the unit.

What to do:

  • The PRD must be replaced once it has activated.

  • Order genuine Triton parts

  • Follow the instructions provided or watch our step‑by‑step video guide on YouTube.

Using only Triton-branded showerheads and hoses helps prevent future PRD activations.

Why Is My Shower Only Running Cold?

If the water is as cold as your cold tap, it usually points to one of two issues:

✔ Thermal Cut‑Out (TCO) activation

This safety device cuts power if the shower overheats.
Solution: Book an engineer visit to diagnose why it activated.

✔ Low water pressure

If your shower has a low-pressure indicator, check if it’s lit. Low pressure prevents the heaters from switching on.

Tip: Have the pressure issue checked before booking an engineer; it may be a supply problem, not a product fault.

Why Is My Shower Water Too Hot?

Water that feels too hot, even on a cool setting, usually means there’s a restriction in flow.

Martyn recommends checking:

  • The stop tap and all service valves are fully open.

  • The showerhead: remove it and test the temperature. If it improves, your spray plate may be limescaled.

  • The shower hose: a collapsed inner lining can restrict water flow. With the head removed, the flow should be smooth. If not, replace the hose with a Triton genuine part.

A quick clean or accessory swap often resolves this completely.

Why Does My Shower Keep Going Hot And Cold?

Around 90% of cycling temperature calls are not faults.

The most common cause? Unstable incoming water pressure is often due to:

  • Water is being used elsewhere in your home

  • Usage from neighbouring properties on a shared supply

Another cause is a temperature setting that’s too high, triggering the TCO’s reset cycle.

Try this:
Turn the temperature down slightly. If the cycling stops, you’ve found the culprit.

No Water Is Coming From My Shower - What Should I Check?

Before calling, run through these simple checks:

  • Is the shower circuit on at your consumer unit?

  • Has the RCD tripped?

  • Is the isolation switch near the bathroom switched on?

If all switches are on, the issue may be:

  • A faulty solenoid (controlling water flow)

  • A faulty PCB (on push‑button models)

Both require engineer diagnosis and repair.

My Shower Is Leaking Inside The Unit - What Should I Do?

If the leak isn’t coming from the PRD, stop using the shower immediately.

It may need a service visit. Contact Triton CX on 02476 372 222 for advice before continuing to use it.

Is My Shower Tripping The Electricity?

What happens when it trips helps identify the cause:

  • Trips when the isolation switch turns on → wiring fault in the consumer unit, not the shower

  • Trips when water is heating → possible heater assembly fault

  • Trips mid‑shower + lukewarm water afterwards → one of the heaters may have failed

Any of these scenarios requires a trained engineer.

My Shower Lights Are Flashing - What Does This Mean?

This varies by model.

For example, Omnicare uses a sequence of flashes to identify specific issues, while other models may only indicate low pressure or an electronic fault.

Flashing lights usually mean the shower needs to be assessed by a Triton engineer.
