Future Homes Standard Response - Recognising Domestic Hot Water Demand-Reduction in SAP 10.3

Reducing domestic hot water demand is one of the most effective yet often overlooked opportunities to improve the performance of future homes. As space heating demand continues to fall, showering now represents a significant share of household energy and water consumption. Technologies that reduce water use, lower hot water demand and recover heat from wastewater can deliver meaningful reductions in energy use, carbon emissions, running costs and pressure on water resources. This report explores how these demand-reduction technologies can support the Future Homes Standard and why compliance frameworks should properly recognise their contribution to delivering efficient, affordable and sustainable homes.

Savings at a glance:

Annual energy use for showering is reduced by approximately 35.1% (228 kWh) when the mixer shower supplied by a heat pump and cylinder without WWHRS is replaced with an IES paired with WWHRS - reducing annual energy use from 649 kWh to 421 kWh.
Annual potable water use for the IES paired with WWHRS is approximately 41.6% lower (18,230 litres), at 25,566 litres, compared with 43,796 litres for the mixer shower supplied by a heat pump and cylinder with/without WWHRS.
Annual carbon emissions are approximately 36.7% lower (40 kgCO₂e) for the IES paired with WWHRS, at 69 kgCO₂e, compared with 109 kgCO₂e for the mixer shower supplied by a heat pump and cylinder without WWHRS.
Combined annual energy and water costs are approximately 38.4% lower (£137) for the IES paired with WWHRS (£220) than for the mixer shower supplied by a heat pump and cylinder without WWHRS (£357).
