What are the different home water systems?
Understanding your home's water system makes it much easier to find the best shower for your home. Our helpful video explains the different types of water system you may have in more detail.
The different types of water system are as follows;
High Pressure Systems
Low Pressure Systems
Cold Mains Systems
So, what type of shower do I need?
Once you are familiar with which water system you have, this will determine which type(s) of shower you are able to choose from.
Low Pressure - Gravity Fed System
- Remains a common system within the UK
- Household water supply kept under pressure through gravity
- Typically involves a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water tank in an airing cupboard
- Water pressure experienced when showering is dependent on the height of the cold water tank in the loft (higher this is, the greater the water pressure experienced)

Cold Water Mains System (electric showers)
- Suitable for most electric showers
- Electric shower unit is connected to cold mains water supply
- No stored hot water source is used or required on this system, the electric shower's heating element heats the water
- Energy efficient - heats water on demand within the electric shower
- If insufficient cold water mains pressure, a pumped electric shower will be required and connected to the gravity system instead of directly to the cold mains water supply.
